Identifying AI-Generated Images

We are conducting this research project to better understand multimedia generated by AI, and, more importantly, investigate if human users are capable of distinguishing AI-generated images from human-generated images. This will entail your completion of a survey, which will ask you to examine ten images and identify if each of them is generated by AI or human (traditional photographing or painting).

  • Voluntary Participation. Your participation in this research project is completely voluntary. Your participation will take 3 to 5 minutes. Completion of the survey indicates your willingness to take part in this study and that you are at least 18 years old.
  • Confidentiality and Data Use. We do not collect any personal information from you. We will ensure the confidentiality and integrity of all the information collected by this survey. The data handling process will comply with KU IT data security policies/procedures (https://policy.ku.edu/IT/data-classification-handling-procedures).
  • Right to Withdraw. Refusal to participate will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled to, and you may discontinue your participation at any time without penalty. The answers will be recorded only when you click the “submit” button.
  • Anonymous Data Collection. All the survey results are collected and stored anonymously. Please be informed that once you submit the survey, we will be unable to remove your answers, since we are unable to distinguish your input from others’

Risks and Benefits

  • Your participation should cause no more discomfort than you would experience in your everyday life.
  • It is possible, however, with internet communications, that through intent or accident someone other than the intended recipient may see your response.
  • Although participation may not benefit you directly, the information obtained from the study will help us better understand AI-generated image content. The results of this research will be published, which will contribute to generalizable knowledge and benefit the broader research community.
